How can anybody but Hobsbawm combine such wisdom and thoughtfulness in one volume? He writes with such a breadth of knowledge and grasp of facts that only Braudel, Toynbee, and Gibbon are capable of. When you read Hobsbawm on the nature of international relations in the 21st century, and then go back and rA raíz de cumplirse setenta años de la invasión de Polonia por tropas alemanas, fecha tradicionalmente considerada como inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en estos días se ha escrito abundantemente sobre dicho período como lo hacen Jorge , Marcos e Iván en estos interesantes posts. Super Chef is an online magazine that follows the careers, empires, trends, media, and brands of super chefs in America and abroad. Here is a book review I wrote recently for Insight, an in-house publication at the ISB. A good financial crisis is a terrible thing to waste. Especially for historians. I don’t always like Niall Ferguson’s interpretations of history, especially his seeming high regard for imperialism, but the fact is he is one of the most influential historians of the last decade. Niall Ferguson had coined the term “Chimerica” to describe the symbiotic relationship between the economies of China and the United States. He currently sees this relationship as being in jeopardy, while James Fallows feels the relationship is far stronger the most realize. This video i

A nice bit of reporting by David Brooks in the New York Times . Brooks attended one of those intelligentsia meetings where China policy was discussed. Luckily for the reality-based community, Jim Fallows was there providing counterpoint to Niall Ferguson, who was apparently representing the batshit neocon community. Now, I haven’t liked Ferguson for some time now, notably because of his neo-imperialistic ideas pBy Robert J. Samuelson Niall Ferguson is one of those rare characters: a respected scholar who's also a successful popularizer. Ferguson, a Brit, has taught at Oxford and New York University and is now at Harvard. He has written about World War I, the British Empire and the Rothschilds . He has turned four of his projects into TV documentaries, the latest of which -- "The Ascent of Money," also a book -- begins airing on PBS on Wednesday. It is a progra
